Trivia Tuesday – Dust of Ages

If I were to ask you to name your five favorite Peanuts characters, who would you name?  The top four are fairly predictable.  You have:

Charlie Brown

So, who would you name as #5?  If you are like most Americans (according to a 2000 Gallup poll), your answer would be Pig-Pen.

Pig-Pengot his start pretty much as a one-off gag character, according to Charles Schultz, creator of the Peanuts, and he regretted Pig-Pen’s popularity because it was hard to write intersting gags about the eternally dirty and disheveled kid.  Despite his popularity, he was rarely used, and Schultz’  last  usage of the character in his strip was in 1999.

However, Pig-Pen continues to live in, now in the annals of science.  Scientists are studying the halo of microscopic dirt, dust and bacteria that follow us around, especially in regards to young kids who suffer from asthma.  And these scientists have named this halo after our little pal, calling it “The Pigpen Effect”. Continue to be proud of your cloud of dirt, friend Pig-Pen.  You are helping out asthmatic kids everywhere!
