We-View Wednesday – Rest Your Soul

“The repose of sleep refreshes only the body.  It rarely sets the soul at rest.”–Gaston Bachelard

What would it be like to never have to sleep?

Humans spend an enormous amount of time in bed (some of us more than others – wink, wink, nudge, nudge) asleep. An average person, living 74 years, sleeps one third of his life. One third! That means we spend about 24 years asleep. While sleep is a necessary activity to restore and rejuvenate the body and the brain; 24 years seems a bit extreme and down right wasteful.

What would it be like if we did not need to sleep? What do we miss while we are asleep? What could we achieve if we did not need to sleep? What would we do with 6-8 extra hours?

Rest, from Devil’s Due Publishing, (based on a screenplay by Michael O’Sullivan, written by Milo Ventimiglia and Russ Cundiff, featuring artwork from Shawn McManus), may give us some indication of what could happen if we did not have to rest.

John Barrett has a life that is going nowhere. In his late 20s, John has no friends, a shitty job, and nothing to look forward to at the beginning of each day. In steps an old college friend, Teddy Blake, who now works for Donte-Global (a fictional pharmaceutical company) that developed a drug implant that eliminates the need for sleep for 350 days. Teddy has been participating in the ongoing study of the implant and convinces John, after seeing revealing his new and improved lifestyle, to have the implant inserted also.

The possibility of a scientist coming up with this same idea and selling it to a drug company may not be in the all too distant future and the concept is not at all far fetched. This story, in fact, is conceivable, while the conspiracy that John encounters, hopefully, will not be the inevitable outcome.

There are many things a reader can glean or imagine as they absorb this story, most of which will be sprouted by the readers own belief system and imagination. Personally, I love a good conspiracy theory as much as the next person. Many would say I love them more, much more 🙂 and I can imagine a time when sleeping/non-sleeping will be an option for citizens of the world to choose or, even more so, chosen for us by a governmental entity.

I find this story line to be very interesting with many possibilities and I wait patiently for the next installment to see if the things that I imagine come to pass in story form.
