Posted in Trivia Tuesday with tags , , , , on January 27, 2009 by hergeek

Our first Trivia Tuesday entry is about Dr. William Moulton Marston.  Dr. Marston will be a name known to many a geek, because he is the creator of one of DC Comics iconic characters, Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman

Shiny!

Wonder Woman will be a name familiar to most of you, even the non-geeks, simply from the late 70’s TV show starring Lynda Carter.  What people who know the TV show will immediately remember will be the “twirl around in a circle to change into your costume” power that she had, probably followed by her ability to deflect bullets with her bracelets, and then her cheesy invisible plane  (Hmm.  Would it be harder or easier to land an invisible plane?  Must ask my pilot father this question.  But I digress.)

Hey you! On the ground! Stop looking at my ass!

Hey you! On the ground! Stop looking at my ass!

But how many of you remember her golden lasso?

Wonder Woman possesses a golden lasso that has the ability to compel a person to tell the truth when they are bound with it.  Now, aside from the underlying B&D themes with this, there is another very interesting fact behind the golden lasso concept: Dr. William Moulton Marston was also the creator of the systolic blood pressure test for lie detection. So, while the fictional golden lasso forced the truth from you, the polygraph will detect your lies (without the underlying B&D themes.  Alas.)
